Please Note: Room 404 is painted with fine art murals by Tim Gaskin. The Hotel des Arts is
in no way associated with any of the companies or celebrities whose trademarks and likenesses
appear in the murals.
Tim Gaskin speaks fluent Pop, as is evidenced by his Painted Room featuring a giant pop star with fashion logos, which he describes as “grotesquely enlarged.”
But beware, dear viewer: Room 404 is no ordinary brandfest. Though the artist describes his piece as a “genie bottle” – the perfect spot for cocktails with the girls – he has also lent his Feng Shui expertise to a problematically aligned room.
“There are ways to add luck to any room,” he says. “This space had plenty of chi. I’ve added warm browns and hot-colored logos to create a party atmosphere.”
Gaskin’s first major art show combined Feng Shui principles and a colorist’s sensibilities with the Pop Art style. His secret weapon: changing people’s feelings through colors.
Gaskin possesses a unique ability to sense and adapt – talents that may spring from the tumult of his own history. He began painting at fourteen, when he was already living on his own. As the only gay kid in a household of rough brothers and a father experimenting with drugs, Gaskin found safety in art. The refuge has served him well.
“I have will and vision,” he says. “But I will always struggle with my identity as a human being, as a community member, and as a friend.” Gaskin recently launched OUT Spoken, a cable-access talk show featuring people from the local LGBT community.
On Gaskin’s horizon: large cowhides, logo-branded with custom-made irons and framed. He will also screen logos onto tan hide that looks like leather.
